From the director of Aliens and Blade Runner has come a movie which will take you back into the days of the Roman Empire and it's civilization. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone. This starts a competition between Maximus, (a man who wants to go back home to his wife and son, and live with them on the farm) and Commodus, the only son of Marcus Aurelius, who is thirsty for power. Marcus only tells his idea of making Maximus king to Maximus himself. But Commodus over hears and so kills the king, making himself Caeser. Maximus was sent to be slaughtered, but Maximus, being a general killed the crap out of all his executioners and ran away. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, the first 25 min are of nothing but utter violence ,huge crowd scenes of thousands of people). Most choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling.
